Ture Andersen, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and Audiological Clinic, University Hospital, Odense

The educational program of Audiology is described here: http://www.sdu.dk/Uddannelse/Uddannelsesoversigt/Bachelor/Audiologi.aspx (In Danish). From September 2008 a M.Sc. education in Technical Audiology will start as a continuation of the Bachelor education.

The Engineering Acoustics MSc program (described here) will be part of the collaboration between SDU (University of Southern Denmark) in Odense and DTU (Technical University of Denmark) in Lyngby.

Torben Poulsen, Acoustic Technology, Technical University of Denmark (DTU)
At Acoustic Technology we will collaborate with SDU on the audiology education, especially on Masters' projects and possible PhD-projects. We also have some contact to the education at University of Copenhagen. See http://audiologopaedi.ku.dk/ and http://studier.ku.dk/studier_a-z/audiologopaedi/ (both sites in Danish). This education is more language/speech related than technical.

Serbia

Branka Mikic

There are basically two types of university degrees in audiology. The first one is audiological physician, which are medical doctors with four years of specialization in otorhinolaryngology followed by two years of postgraduate studies in audiology. The curriculum is medically orientated with additional information on acoustics, hearing aids and cochlear implants as well as rehabilitation of hearing impaired people. There are 35-40 audiologist in Serbia (7 million population).

The other type of education is four and a half year study of surdoaudiology in the Faculty of special education and rehabilitation. During the studies they get medical, technical and pedagogical knowledge so that they can become clinical audiologist involved in audiological diagnostic procedures, fitting of hearing aids and cochlear implants, rehabilitation of hearing impaired children and teaching in schools for deaf. There 25-30 students enrolling in such studies each year.

Both programs in audiology are organized in Belgrade, by Belgrade State and
University. Audiological physicians are educated in Medical faculty. The postgraduate studies take two years for ENT specialists. Precise curriculum is under reconstruction at the moment. The web address of the Medical faculty of Belgrade University is http://www.mef.bg.ac.yu. Surdoaudiologist are educated in undergraduate studies in Faculty of Special Education and Rehabilitation. Its website is http://www.fasper.bg.ac.yu. The program takes nine semesters (4,5 years). Curriculum details could be obtained from the website.

Our audiology dept. in Ljubljana, Slovenija, is interested in University education in audiology but at the moment in our country there is a "transition period" in health system and institutions and we could not get the agreement to participate.

Sweden

Inger Uhlén
Audiology is a separate medical speciality in Sweden. With new regulations from 2006 You first have to become specialist in ENT. This is not a big problem since most specialists in Audiology are also specialists in ENT and work in a ENT department. There are separate departments in Audiology in some of the big university hospitals.
There is no formal education to become an Audiology physician. Clinical training in an Audiology department, ENT department and also some other fields like neurology, neurosurgery, neurophysiology, pediatry etc is performed under surveillance. One week courses in medical and technical audiology, vestibular disorders and pediatric audiology are given on a national basis.
Audiology ingeneers have a similar situation. Only audiology technicians (audiologists) have a formal 3-year education. There is a need for more education in all fields of audiology (acoustics, medicine, genetics, technology, child development,
electrophysiology etc) for physicians in audiology. Sweden is too small to provide enough education for the small group of young new specialists. Cooperation across borders and between professions in audiology is necessary.
